As the HIV positive population is aging into and beyond their fifties, the epidemic is reforming and reshaping. This population is not only aging with HIV, they are becoming infected later in life as well. It is therefore becoming increasingly important for providers to acknowledge the challenges and barriers faced by older people living with HIV (OPLWH).
APLA recently conducted focus groups with OPLWH, and subsequently identified some unexplored challenges using the information gathered from the focus groups. The webinar will give a brief overview of the current HIV epidemic in the aging population, as well as a review of existing literature. The majority of the webinar content will revolve around exploring factors specifically affecting OPLWH and older people who exhibit risk factors for HIV. These factors will range from comorbidities and biomedical risk factors, to the negative impacts of societal norms among the aging population and the potential challenges of navigating, recruiting, and engaging these individuals. The webinar will also introduce an assessment tool, developed by APLA, which will provide participants with a framework for identifying the challenges of their aging priority populations, and identifying some potential resources or solutions to address said challenges. APLA would like to present this webinar to HD’s, CBO’s, and HCO’s to inform their development or reframe their approach to addressing the HIV epidemic in the aging population.
By the end of this webinar participants will:
•Increase their base knowledge about the experiences of OPLWH
•Increase their capacity to address the HIV epidemic among older people living in their jurisdiction
•Be able to utilize an assessment tool to identify existing opportunities to serve OPLWH
